Kenny Dalglish – In buoyant mood after reminder of former glories

Kenny Dalglish is hoping the Liverpool fans can create another cauldron of noise for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Manchester United.

The Reds dumped Man City out of the Carling Cup on Wednesday night to book their place in the final against Cardiff on February 26.

A crackling atmosphere under the Anfield floodlights evoked memories of former glories and Dalglish hopes the Liverpool faithful can repeat the feat as they target a fifth-round spot at Saturday lunchtime.

“We are looking forward to a fantastic match,” he said.

“We had unbelievable support from our people on Wednesday night and I am sure we will get the same again.

“We would be delighted if we could replicate what happened on Wednesday but we know what we are going to get from our supporters – they are 100 per cent behind us.

“Had it not been for their support we might not be going to Wembley.

Fantastic spectacle

“They know their importance and we respect that importance. I am sure people can look forward to a fantastic spectacle.”

Although Liverpool drew 2-2 on Wednesday night, they went through on aggregate having won 1-0 at City.

That secured their first Cup final at Wembley since 1996, when traditional rivals United were 1-0 winners.

Liverpool will therefore be looking to avenge that defeat, as well as gaining payback for last season’s third-round exit at Old Trafford.

“The significance of a match between Liverpool and Manchester United is always of great importance and this one will be no different,” added Dalglish, who won the FA Cup in 1986 and 1989 in his first spell as Reds boss.
